Eli Lilly Advances Oral GLP-1 Orforglipron With China Investment and Pipeline Expansion

Eli Lilly is preparing for the launch of oral weight loss pill Orforglipron with a US$3 billion, decade-long investment in China, while advancing its oncology and genetic medicine pipeline with positive Phase 3 results for Retevmo and a milestone in CRISPR collaboration.

Eli Lilly is preparing for the launch of its oral weight loss pill Orforglipron, backing it with large inventory build up and new manufacturing investment ahead of expected approval. The company has outlined a US$3 billion, decade-long investment in China tied to its oral GLP-1 drug orforglipron, while separately pressing U.S. regulators on compounded tirzepatide safety.

The company and Scribe Therapeutics reached a key milestone in their collaboration on next generation CRISPR based genetic medicines. Lilly also reported a positive Phase 3 trial result for its cancer drug Retevmo in early stage lung cancer.

Orforglipron aims to extend the company's presence into oral therapies that could appeal to patients who prefer pills over injections. The company is already widely followed for its obesity and diabetes treatments.

At US$1,036.05, Eli Lilly trades about 14% below the US$1,201.63 analyst target. One valuation model indicates the shares trade around 26.1% below estimated fair value. The company has seen a 30 day share price decline of 5.28% and a year to date share price decline of 8.82%, while the 1 year total shareholder return of 21.99% and 3 year total shareholder return of just over 3x still point to strong longer run momentum.

The current P/E of 42.6x is roughly in line with a fair ratio of 42.5x, yet well above the US Pharmaceuticals average of 17.4x and peer average of 18.5x, which suggests little room for error if growth or margins fall short.

The collaboration progress with Scribe Therapeutics and the Phase 3 data for Retevmo point to a pipeline that reaches beyond obesity and diabetes. As approvals, manufacturing ramp up, and additional trial readouts unfold, the mix of products drawing attention could broaden across segments of healthcare.
