Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by elevated blood glucose due to insufficient insulin production, ineffective insulin action, or both. Persistent hyperglycaemia can damage blood vessels, nerves, kidneys, eyes, and other organs over time. Type 2 diabetes accounts for the vast majority of diabetes cases.
