Novo Nordisk Invests $506 Million in Ireland Facility to Expand Wegovy Pill Production

Novo Nordisk announced a $506 million investment to expand its Athlone, Ireland manufacturing facility for oral GLP-1 drugs, following strong early uptake of Wegovy weight loss pills in the US market.

Novo Nordisk has announced a $506 million investment to expand its manufacturing facility in Athlone, Ireland. The expansion is expected to support growing global demand for the company's therapies, particularly within its diabetes and obesity portfolio.

According to the company, the investment goes toward upgrading and retrofitting the Athlone facility to improve the manufacturing capacity for its weight loss tablets. The expansion will allow Ireland to serve as a critical hub for servicing markets outside the US.

"With the investment in the Athlone facility, Novo Nordisk is expanding its production capacities for oral products, which will enable us to meet both current and future global demand outside the US," said Kasper Bodker Mejlvang, executive vice-president of chemistry, manufacturing and control, and product supply at Novo Nordisk.

The investment comes after Novo launched its popular weight loss drug Wegovy in a pill form in January. Early uptake of the pill in the US was more than twice that of any previous weight loss drug launch in the country. The CEO told media last month that more than 240,000 Americans are already taking Wegovy pills. Meanwhile, University College London estimated than around 1.6m adults in the UK used weight loss drugs such as Wegovy and Mounjaro between early 2024 to early 2025.

The freshly announced retrofitting and expansion projects in Athlone cover 45 acres of land, and is set to create up to 600 construction jobs according to the company. The projects will be finalised from the end of 2027 through 2028.

The announcement comes a year after the company announced 115 redundancies at the same site as part of a global initiative to reduce staff, representing more than a quarter of the workforce. The Danish pharmaceutical giant employed around 400 at the Monksland, Athlone facility last September, prior to the mandatory redundancy announcement. The facility now employs only 260.

Globally, the company currently employs around 68,800 after cutting nearly 10,000 roles since September. Novo Nordisk expects the job cuts to deliver total annualised savings of €1.07bn by 2026.

"If we were about to throw in the towel, we would not be investing in factories in Ireland," commented the CEO. The move reflects continued capital deployment toward scaling production capacity and strengthening long-term supply chain resilience.
