Ocugen Reports Phase 2 Data for Geographic Atrophy Gene Therapy OCU410
Ocugen reported Phase 2 data for its geographic atrophy gene therapy OCU410 showing 31% lesion growth reduction versus control. The company plans Phase 3 initiation in Q3 2026 and maintains its goal of three BLA filings in three years. Shares fell 11.48% following the data release which trailed earlier interim results.
Ocugen has released Phase 2 trial data for its investigational gene therapy OCU410 for geographic atrophy secondary to dry age-related macular degeneration. The data showed efficacy signals but trailed earlier interim results, with the optimal mid-dose cohort demonstrating a 31% reduction in lesion growth versus control. The company plans to initiate a Phase 3 registrational trial in the third quarter of 2026, maintaining its goal of three Biologics License Application filings in three years.
The trial involved 51 patients aged 50 and older randomized to receive either a medium or high dose of OCU410 or no treatment. Treatment slowed ellipsoid zone loss by 27%, suggesting preservation of photoreceptor structure linked to visual function. In subgroup analysis of subjects with baseline GA lesions between 5 mm² and 17.5 mm², the medium dose showed 33% reduction in lesion growth compared to control, with similar reductions in the high dose group.
The data released on Tuesday came lower than interim data released in January. The interim data had shown a 46% lesion growth reduction (medium + high dose vs. control) at 12 months, while the medium dose achieved 54% lesion reduction and high dose 36% compared to control in that earlier readout. In the current data, 55% of patients achieved over 30% lesion size reduction versus the control group.
Ocugen plans a special call to present full Phase 2 ArMaDa trial data for OCU410. The company was recently added to the S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index, increasing its visibility among biotech investors. New analyst coverage has begun to focus on Ocugen's gene therapy pipeline, particularly programs targeting retinal diseases.
The company is advancing multiple gene therapy candidates for ocular diseases, including OCU400 and OCU410ST. OCU400 is in Phase 3 development and represents a differentiated approach to ophthalmic gene therapy based on nuclear hormone receptor technology. The company's programs target areas of high unmet medical need in retinal diseases.
Ocugen shares were down 11.48% at $1.85 following the data release. Over the past 12 months, shares have increased 182% and are currently positioned closer to their 52-week highs than lows. The stock carries a Buy Rating with an average price target of $7.55 according to analyst consensus, with recent coverage including positive ratings from Oppenheimer and Canaccord Genuity.
The company faces ongoing cash burn and a going concern warning in its 2025 financial filings, underlining that future funding and potential dilution remain key risks alongside negative shareholders' equity. All core programs, including OCU410 and OCU400, are still in clinical development, so any disappointing data or regulatory delay could quickly shift sentiment after the recent share price surge.
