UK's £1.6bn Healthcare AI Strategy Unveiled as Market Projected to Hit $696bn

The UK's £1.6bn national AI strategy targets healthcare breakthroughs from cancer detection to drug discovery. The AI healthcare market is forecast to reach US$696bn by 2034, a 38.5% CAGR.

The UK Government has unveiled its first-ever national Research & Development AI strategy, a plan designed to accelerate innovation across high-impact sectors through a dedicated £1.6bn (US$2.2bn) investment in artificial intelligence. The strategy is aimed at breakthroughs in healthcare to convert the nation’s world-class research base into deployable solutions that improve lives and strengthen the economy.

The Deputy Prime Minister, leading the UK delegation at the India AI Impact Summit, said: 'The UK is backing its pioneering AI leadership with more than £1.6bn (US$2.2bn) in investment to make sure the best of British expertise develops the next wave of AI innovations... From spotting cancers earlier to cutting backlogs in public services, new research into AI will be a game-changer, bringing the promise of tomorrow’s technologies to the UK today.'

AI is already showing promise in detecting early signs of diseases, including Alzheimer’s, through advanced, AI-powered brain imaging systems. Building on such advances, UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) is supporting a portfolio of AI-driven research projects spanning drug discovery and treatment innovation. The initiatives are backed by £137m (US$185m) and aim to streamline discovery pipelines and move life-saving medications and therapies straight from the lab to clinic. The government is also expanding AI education and training with the goal to develop a highly skilled workforce that can use AI systems in healthcare, including data scientists, research software engineers and ethics specialists.

The UK's AI Minister said: 'The potential of combining our AI expertise with our peerless R&D community is a game-changer. This plan will harness AI to accelerate both the pace and possibility of scientific endeavour.' One of the strategy's core aims is to translate scientific excellence into economic advantage. By deepening collaboration between universities and business leaders, the government intends to ensure the UK’s AI research is rapidly converted into commercial products and public-service improvements. The Senior Responsible Owner for the UKRI AI Programme and Executive Chair of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council said: 'The UK has deep strengths in AI... We have a world-class tradition in mathematics and computer science. This strategy will turn that research excellence into national advantage.'

The announcement comes as the global AI in healthcare market is projected to expand significantly. North America dominated the market with a 43.5% share. In 2024, the U.S. digital health sector attracted US$17.2 billion in venture capital funding, with 58% directed toward AI-based technologies. Strategic collaborations, such as Medtronic’s partnership with Siemens Healthineers to advance AI-enabled spine surgery, further strengthened regional growth. A Microsoft-IDC study reported that 79% of healthcare organizations had adopted AI, achieving an average return of US$3.20 for every US$1 invested. Canada also accelerated AI adoption through its Budget 2024 investment package.

Asia Pacific is projected to register the fastest growth, driven by increasing government support and expanding digital healthcare infrastructure. Governments across India, China, and Japan are promoting AI integration through healthcare modernization initiatives. The launch of AI-powered healthcare applications, such as Andhra Pradesh’s Janani Mitra app, along with technology providers including Huawei introducing advanced AI healthcare solutions, is expected to accelerate regional market expansion.

Emerging trends include increased use of AI in diagnosis, supporting early detection of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and eye disorders. Challenges such as data privacy, regulatory compliance and algorithm bias continue to be addressed through ongoing technological improvements and policy frameworks.
