South African Hawks Crack Down on Drug Networks in Multiple Operations
South African authorities have executed multiple major drug enforcement operations, including a R250 million crystal meth lab bust in the North West and a network disruption in Gqeberha. These actions are part of an ongoing crackdown on organised drug crime.
South African law enforcement agencies have conducted a series of major anti-drug operations in recent months, disrupting networks across several provinces. The actions include the arrest of farm owners linked to a large crystal meth laboratory, the disruption of a drug network in Gqeberha, and ongoing investigations into a historic cocaine theft case.
In the most recent operation, the owners of a North West farm were arrested for their alleged involvement in a crystal meth manufacturing operation linked to an international syndicate. The accused, Tyron John Schutte, Kyle Schutte, Chantel Adele Schutte, and Johann Louis Schutte, voluntarily presented themselves to police before appearing in the Swartruggens Magistrates Court on 22 May 2026. They are charged with manufacturing illicit drugs, illegal possession of hazardous chemicals, and illegal possession of precious metals. They appeared alongside 11 co-accused, eight of whom were identified as illegal immigrants and charged under the Immigration Act. The value of the drugs seized in this operation was initially estimated at R100 million but has since been revised to R250 million. The matter is postponed to 12 June 2026 for formal bail applications. Acting National Commissioner of SAPS, Puleng Dimpane, described the bust as a major breakthrough against organised crime.
Separately, the Hawks' Serious Organised Crime Investigation, in collaboration with SAPS Crime Intelligence, disrupted an alleged drug network in the northern areas of Gqeberha on 12 February 2026. Two suspects, aged 49 and 52, were arrested and found in possession of prohibited substances. Separate case dockets were opened for dealing in drugs and narcotics. The suspects were released on warning, and a third suspect remains at large. This operation is part of an ongoing campaign targeting drug trafficking in Gelvandale and Bethelsdorp. In December 2025, the Hawks and National Prosecuting Authority also made progress in a major drug bust in Aliwal North, Eastern Cape, recovering drugs with an estimated street value of R101 million.
These operations coincide with ongoing scrutiny of a historic cocaine theft case. Colonel Gavin Jacob testified before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on 3 June 2026 regarding the disappearance of 541kg of cocaine valued at over R200 million from a Hawks storage site in Port Shepstone in November 2021. Despite five years passing, no arrests have been made in that case. Jacob revealed that a potential breakthrough emerged in January 2026 when investigators were led to a whistle-blower who claimed involvement in the theft. This information was escalated to the KZN Hawks head on 22 April 2026. The commission is examining the handling of the seized drugs and the circumstances of the theft.
