U.S. and Global Funders Announce New Life Sciences and Biotech Opportunities

U.S. federal agencies, international organizations, and universities have announced a wave of new funding opportunities for life sciences and biotechnology research. The offerings range from National Institutes of Health (NIH) awards of up to $30 million to fully funded PhD scholarships and postdoctoral fellowships for researchers worldwide.

Congress has renewed and reformed the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs, which provide non-dilutive funding for small U.S. businesses pursuing life sciences R&D. On the heels of that reauthorization, NIH announced new SBIR funding opportunities, including "Strategic Breakthrough" awards worth up to $30 million over a 48-month period of performance, intended to help early-stage companies bridge the "valley of death." Draft versions of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2027 include the House's proposed Section 227, which would establish "Prize Competitions to Support the Research and Development of Biotechnology for the Department of Defense." Pursuing federal funding carries compliance obligations: recent SBIR/STTR reforms enhance disclosure requirements for foreign collaborations, and a U.S. Court of Federal Claims decision confirms agencies may reject applicants over foreign influence concerns. Designated entity lists have expanded to include Chinese biotech companies such as WuXi AppTec, subject to ongoing litigation.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has reorganized its Directorate for Biological Sciences into three cross-cutting thematic areas: Foundations of Life, Living Systems, and Bioinnovation & Infrastructure. It also released a funding opportunity for Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology (PRFB; NSF 26-504) focused on the "Intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Biological Sciences to Strengthen and Safeguard Biotechnology Innovations." The program aims to prepare early-career researchers to use AI to study complex biological systems, and a virtual office hour is scheduled for June 17, 2026.

A June funding roundup lists 404 active opportunities, including 141 new listings, with over $900 million in available funding. Notable calls include the Clinton Health Access Initiative's $700,000 catalytic grant requiring AI cervical triage to work offline with same-encounter results, the EU's AIoD Open Call with a TRL 7-plus floor and mandatory Docker containerization, and XPRIZE's $2 million Build with Gemini hackathon for non-engineers. A separate mid-May update added 26 new funding opportunities exceeding $40 million, 22 of which closed within 30 days. Several large allocations are structured as single-winner competitions, including the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation's €3.35 million Jordan Child Protection program and the Netherlands' OCIAC and OCIF programmes, which each select one winner per target country.

Funders are increasingly setting eligibility by identity and locality. UNHCR's four Southern Africa calls name Refugee-Led Organizations as implementing partners; ICVA's PSEA Community Outreach Fund excludes large global organizations; FAO's AFR100 grants in Kenya channel capital directly to forest and farmer producer organizations and women's groups; and Grand Challenges South Africa requires South African citizens at registered domestic institutions, with women-led teams and historically black universities prioritized in scoring.

Additional fully funded opportunities include the University of Florence PEGASO PhD Scholarships across more than 30 research programmes; a fully funded PhD position in Molecular Parasitology at Texas State University focused on malaria research; Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships 2027–2028 for students from more than 180 countries; the Harvard Academy Scholars Program, a two-year opportunity for early-career social scientists; and University of the Witwatersrand postdoctoral fellowships covering artificial intelligence, genomics, education, and mining research.

The University of Tulsa's College of Engineering & Computer Science has launched four inaugural faculty fellowships funded by alumni Antonio A. Pietri and Carrie Kirk. The fellows are Ahmad Amiri (chemical engineering, energy storage), Michael Keller (mechanical engineering, composite materials), Weiping Pei (cyber studies, cybersecurity and AI), and Will LePage (mechanical engineering, advanced manufacturing). Two of the fellows hold National Science Foundation CAREER Awards.
