Summary

In unselected cirrhotic patients with bleeding esophageal varices to compare the influence on mortality rate, duration of life, quality of life, and economic costs of treatment of:

* Emergency portacaval shunt, and
* Emergency and long-term endoscopic sclerotherapy.
