Stony Brook Expands SWFT Labs Partnership, Driving 'Silicon Island' Vision

Stony Brook University and SWFT Labs expanded a partnership to commercialize cellulose nanomaterials as plastic alternatives, advancing the 'Silicon Island' vision for Long Island as a tech hub. The effort is backed by state quantum and biotech investments.

Stony Brook University and biotechnology company SWFT Labs have expanded their research partnership through a newly executed Master Research Agreement, accelerating the commercialization of a breakthrough cellulose nanomaterials platform originally developed at the university. The agreement positions Long Island at the forefront of the emerging bio-based materials economy, reinforcing the region’s role as a hub for advanced materials, biotechnology and sustainable manufacturing.

The partnership builds on a patented Nitro-Oxidation Process (NOP) developed at Stony Brook, which enables scalable production of highly functional carboxylated cellulosic nanofibers (CNF) derived from cellulose, the most abundant biopolymer on Earth. The process produces tunable nanofibers whose chemistry can be engineered to replace petroleum-derived materials, reduce plastic and microplastic pollution, and address persistent contaminants such as PFAS. SWFT Labs’ CEO stated the process unlocks nature’s most abundant polymer and that the company’s mission is to deliver technology that is scalable and economically compelling. The company’s first commercial product launch is scheduled for April 23, supported by a focused agriculture strategy with four core products designed to improve nutrient delivery efficiency, enhance water retention and increase the performance of crop protection and fertilizer inputs. SWFT Labs is also engaged in strategic discussions across agriculture, industrial materials, water filtration, beauty and personal care, medical technologies and aerospace.

The expanded collaboration was highlighted at the inaugural Long Island Tech & Innovation Summit on June 11, where Stony Brook President Andrea Goldsmith championed the “Silicon Island” concept. She noted that Long Island’s proximity to New York City and its concentration of research institutions make it a natural home for hard technology companies in quantum, biotechnology, clean energy, robotics, advanced manufacturing and applied AI. Goldsmith said Stony Brook, as New York’s number one public university, has the research that will create the seeds of innovation, and the region has all the raw ingredients—Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Brookhaven National Laboratory and other institutions—to create a thriving innovation ecosystem.

In a separate demonstration of state support, leaders from Empire State Development’s Division of Science, Technology and Innovation (NYSTAR) and New York Ventures visited Stony Brook on February 3 and 4. The visit showcased how the university translates research into economic outcomes. Stony Brook generates an estimated $8.93 billion annual economic impact, supports more than 55,000 jobs, and returns roughly $16 in regional economic activity for every $1 of direct state investment. The visit included engagements with NYSTAR-supported centers such as the Center for Biotechnology, the Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT), the Advanced Energy Research and Technology Center (AERTC), and the Long Island Manufacturing Extension Partnership (LIMEP), which create a pipeline from early-stage research to market-ready technologies.

Both the summit and the state visit reinforced Stony Brook’s leadership in quantum technology. New York State has invested $300 million in a quantum initiative centered at Stony Brook, including the nation’s first quantum network already running between Stony Brook and Brookhaven National Laboratory. The New York State Quantum Internet Testbed and related programs aim to position New York as a global leader in secure communications and next-generation networking.
