Misoprostol is a prostaglandin analog medicine used for ulcer prevention and multiple obstetric/gynecologic indications, including abortion regimens and postpartum bleeding contexts. In U.S. products it is marketed as Cytotec and in combinations such as Arthrotec. It is available as an established prescription medicine.
The Supreme Court allowed mifepristone to remain available via telehealth and mail while litigation continues. The FDA has also launched a six-month safety study of the abortion pill. Approximately 29% of U.S. abortions are now provided via telehealth.
The Fifth Circuit reinstated an in-person dispensing requirement for mifepristone, blocking telemedicine prescriptions. The ruling came after a federal judge paused Louisiana's lawsuit pending the FDA's safety review of the abortion medication.
Sen. Josh Hawley and Rep. Diana Harshbarger introduced legislation to withdraw FDA approval of mifepristone nationwide, making distribution a federal violation and allowing patients to sue manufacturers.
