Meningitis is inflammation of the tissues surrounding the brain and spinal cord, most commonly caused by bacterial or viral infection. Bacterial meningitis can progress rapidly and carries high risks of death and long-term neurological disability.
A study finds most children with enterovirus meningitis have favorable long-term outcomes, with only 8.9% experiencing adverse sequelae. Meanwhile, global data shows 259,000 meningitis deaths in 2023, with children under 5 accounting for over one-third of fatalities. Non-polio enteroviruses were the leading cause of meningitis cases worldwide.
Researchers have developed attenuated Listeria bacteria therapies that boost innate immune cells to fight cancer. Two approaches target colorectal cancer and pediatric leukemia, with FDA clearance expected soon for trials in children.
