Canada Energy Regulator backs Westcoast Energy's Sunrise pipeline expansion

Canada’s energy regulator recommended approval of Westcoast Energy’s Sunrise Expansion Program in British Columbia. The project is intended to meet anticipated demand from the Woodfibre LNG facility starting in 2027.

The Commission of the Canada Energy Regulator has recommended that Westcoast Energy's Sunrise Expansion Program be approved by the Canadian federal government. The Commission identified the project as one of public interest and stated that the project is needed to meet anticipated increased demand for natural gas from the Woodfibre LNG export facility, which is slated to begin operations sometime in 2027.

The existing pipeline system is in British Columbia, and the project details new infrastructure plans needed to bring the expansion to fruition. The Commission stated that the project will be developed to meet the regulatory and safety standards set by the federal government.

The project includes:

  • 11 new natural gas pipeline loops totaling approximately 86 miles, primarily adjacent to existing rights-of-way in the BC region.
  • Two additional overhead powerlines to feed electricity to a new electric compressor unit and existing stations.
  • Significant upgrades to existing facilities, as well as modifications and other infrastructure-related activities.

The Commission noted that its findings point to the project becoming a necessity to meet increased demand for natural gas. With the regulatory process ongoing, the Sunrise pipeline expansion is part of Canada’s efforts to increase natural gas export capacity.
