Virginia State Police launch Operation DISS-Rupt on Interstate 81
Virginia State Police launched Operation DISS-Rupt on Interstate 81, a two-day enforcement effort targeting distracted and impaired driving, speeding and seat belt violations.
Virginia State Police are stepping up enforcement along Interstate 81 with a two-day safety initiative called Operation DISS-Rupt. Troopers across multiple divisions will patrol all 325 miles of the interstate on April 28 and 29, targeting distracted or impaired driving, speeding and seat belt violations.
Virginia State Police rotate these operations around interstates in the Commonwealth throughout the year. The operation focuses on four areas that make up the DISRUPT acronym: distracted driving, impaired driving, speed enforcement and seat belt use.
So far this year through April 15, 167 people have died in crashes on Virginia roads, down from the same time period in 2025. Virginia law now requires all vehicle occupants to buckle up, regardless of where they sit. That law changed last year.
