Tacoma steps up DUI patrols targeting drug-impaired driving
Tacoma Police are launching DUI enforcement seven days a week, with a focus on evenings, weekends and late-night hours. The effort targets alcohol impairment, pot and “poly-drug use” and is backed by a $215,000 state grant.
Tacoma Police are starting a crackdown on people behind the wheel after drinking or using drugs. The proactive DUI enforcement will be going on seven days a week, with an emphasis on what are called “high-risk timeframes.” Those are evenings, weekends, and late-night hours.
The extra officers looking for dangerous drivers are being paid for with $215,000 from a High-Visibility Saturation Patrols grant from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.
On top of looking for people who have had too much to drink, Tacoma officers will be focusing on drug-impaired driving, including pot and what police call “poly-drug use.”
The City of Tacoma says that last year, they had 573 DUI offenses. They hope beefed-up patrols, specifically looking for DUI drivers, will bring that number down this year, making the city safer.
