Vertex expands beyond cystic fibrosis with CASGEVY Germany deal and WuXi pact
Vertex secured a Germany reimbursement agreement for CASGEVY and signed a WuXi Biologics pact for a preclinical autoimmune T-cell engager. The moves add to efforts to build revenue beyond cystic fibrosis.
Vertex Pharmaceuticals has secured a reimbursement agreement in Germany for its CASGEVY gene therapy for sickle cell disease and beta thalassemia, and has entered into an agreement with WuXi Biologics to develop a trispecific T-cell engager for B-cell mediated autoimmune diseases. The Germany agreement is the country's first long term access deal for a gene edited therapy of this kind, while the WuXi deal gives Vertex exclusive rights to develop and commercialize the preclinical therapy.
The CASGEVY agreement expands access in Europe and adds to Vertex's efforts to build revenue beyond its cystic fibrosis portfolio. A national deal with GKV-Spitzenverband, the main association of statutory health insurers, gives Vertex clearer visibility on access and pricing for eligible sickle cell disease and beta thalassemia patients in a large European market. Germany now joins the US, UK, Italy and others where reimbursement is in place.
Vertex has said CASGEVY and JOURNAVX are contributors to at least US$500m in non-CF revenue in 2026. The agreement supports Vertex's effort to build a second major revenue pillar alongside cystic fibrosis and supports broader patient access within the country.
Under the WuXi agreement, Vertex will develop a trispecific T-cell engager for B-cell mediated autoimmune diseases. The deal gives Vertex exclusive global rights to the preclinical therapy and broadens its pipeline beyond cystic fibrosis and gene therapies, adding another program on top of renal, hematology and pain projects.
Vertex reported full year 2025 revenue of US$12.0b with net income of US$3.95b, and has said existing efforts in renal disease, gene editing and pain contribute to guidance for US$12.95b to US$13.1b in 2026 revenue. The company already has meaningful revenue from therapies such as ALYFTREK, CASGEVY and JOURNAVX.
