UC Davis Secures $5M Gates Grant, Receives Continued Federal Funding

UC Davis received a $5 million Gates Foundation grant to expand self-cloning crops to other staple foods. Congress approved continued NIH and NSF funding, maintaining similar levels to the previous year. Faculty and students emphasized federal funding's role in supporting basic research and training scientists.

UC Davis announced a series of significant research funding achievements, including a $5 million Gates Foundation grant and confirmation of continued federal support. Researchers in the Department of Plant Biology received the Gates Foundation grant to support the expansion of self-cloning crops from rice to other staple foods in areas where availability of high-yield seeds is either unreliable or expensive. Separately, Congress approved continued research funding for agencies including the NIH and NSF, keeping funding levels similar to the previous year and allowing grants to continue flowing to universities across the country, including UC Davis.

The importance of federal funding for foundational research was highlighted by faculty and students in the College of Biological Sciences. Associate professor Celina Juliano, who leads a lab studying hydra regeneration, stated that federal funding is not only fueling basic research but also allowing her to train the next generation of scientists. Undergraduate researcher Azucena "Zucy" Virgen, a senior majoring in biological sciences and a Barry Goldwater Scholarship recipient, works in Juliano's lab on how these freshwater animals rebuild their heads after injury, a process guided by molecular signaling pathways.

The dean noted that the congressional funding decision allows research and discovery to continue. The announcement also included updates on campus leadership, with associate dean Michele Igo concluding eight years of service upon her retirement in June. For those in the Davis and Sacramento areas, the annual Biodiversity Museum Day is an upcoming opportunity to tour campus collections and organisms.
