Takeda shares draw valuation scrutiny after recent gains and mixed pipeline news

Takeda shares came under valuation scrutiny after recent gains and mixed pipeline news, including a DNL593 collaboration exit and positive Phase 3 data for zasocitinib. The analyses said the stock was trading close to or above widely followed fair value estimates, while DCF assumptions pointed to much higher implied value.

Takeda Pharmaceutical has drawn attention after recent gains and mixed pipeline updates, including a terminated collaboration with Denali Therapeutics on DNL593 for frontotemporal dementia and positive Phase 3 data for psoriasis candidate zasocitinib. With shares trading at ¥5,789 in one analysis and ¥5,614 in another, both articles said the stock was trading close to or above widely followed fair value estimates.

One analysis said Takeda was back in focus after the two contrasting pipeline updates and noted a 30 day share price return of 3.06% and a 1 year total shareholder return of 50.08%. It said the most followed narrative pegged Takeda's fair value at about ¥5,697, slightly below the last close of ¥5,789, while analysts had a consensus price target of ¥5696.87, with the most bullish at ¥6700.0 and the most bearish at ¥4700.0.

The same analysis said its DCF model presented a different perspective, with fair value near ¥18,701 per share, roughly 69% above the current price of ¥5,789. It also said the story could shift quickly if generic competition bites harder than expected or if pending legal proceedings around Actos result in heavier financial pressure.

A separate analysis said Takeda had a 0.1% move over the past day, gains of 1.8% over the past week and 10.7% over the past month, with a past 3 months return of 28.4%, 14.2% year to date, and a 41.4% total return over the past year. With the share price at ¥5,614, it said the current price sat above a widely followed fair value estimate of ¥5,263, while analysts had a consensus price target of ¥5056.071, with the most bullish at ¥5900.0 and the most bearish at ¥4500.0.

That analysis said the view could be challenged if generic and biosimilar competition bites harder than expected, or if key late stage pipeline drugs face setbacks or delays. Both articles framed the key question as whether Takeda is still undervalued or whether the market is already accounting for potential future growth.
