Hypercholesterolemia is a lipid disorder characterized by elevated cholesterol levels, especially LDL cholesterol, in the blood. Persistent elevation contributes to atherosclerosis and increased risk of coronary heart disease and stroke. It can be primary (genetic) or secondary to lifestyle and other medical factors.
