Diabetic macular edema is an ocular complication of diabetes caused by disruption of retinal vascular barriers and fluid accumulation in the macula. It is a major cause of vision loss in people with diabetes and often requires ophthalmologic treatment such as anti-VEGF therapy. Risk increases with diabetes duration and inadequate metabolic control.
