Valproate (including valproic acid and related formulations) is an anti-epileptic and neuropsychiatric therapy used for seizure disorders, acute manic or mixed episodes in bipolar disorder, and migraine prophylaxis. U.S. labeling for valproic acid products lists initial approval in 1978 and extensive boxed warnings for hepatotoxicity, fetal risk, and pancreatitis.
