Finasteride is an FDA-approved 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor used primarily for benign prostatic hyperplasia and androgenic alopecia in men. It works by lowering dihydrotestosterone (DHT) through inhibition of 5-alpha-reductase isoenzymes. Finasteride 5 mg was first used in 1992 for BPH, and 1 mg was approved in 1997 for male pattern hair loss.
