Heart attack, or myocardial infarction, occurs when blood flow to part of the heart muscle is blocked and myocardial tissue is injured. Coronary artery disease is the main cause. Rapid emergency treatment is critical because delayed reperfusion increases permanent heart damage and mortality risk.
