Gastroenteritis is an inflammatory condition of the stomach and intestines, usually presenting with diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and sometimes fever. It is most often caused by viral infection, though bacterial and parasitic pathogens can also cause disease. Most cases are self-limited, but dehydration can be severe, especially in young children and older adults.
