Results Overview

Healthcare provider practices score were assessed using an 8-item Healthcare Provider (HCP) Practices scale from the Healthcare Personnel Survey. The scale evaluated healthcare providers' HPV vaccine recommendation practices, HPV screening recommendation practices, and communication practices. Items were scored on a 5-point Likert scale ranging from Never (1) to Always (5). Healthcare provider practices score is the average score over the 8 items, ranging from 1 to 5, with higher scores indicating better (more frequent engagement in recommended healthcare provider practices related to HPV prevention and screening).

Participant Flow

Recruitment took place via face-to-face and electronic invitation to healthcare providers in practice or in training in West Texas (El Paso County) and Southern New Mexico (mainly Dona Ana County). Access to the survey and intervention was provided via weblink or QR code. Initial recruitment to the clinical trial took place from 12/22/2023 through 05/13/2024. Only participants completing the initial survey and intervention were allowed to complete the 3- and 6-month post-intervention surveys.

161 participants were enrolled for the study; 24 participants subsequently voluntarily withdrew and 137 were randomly assigned to one of the study groups: Control (general communication intervention; n=75) or Treatment (targeted educational intervention; n=62).

Healthcare provider (HCP) attitudes toward HPV and the HPV vaccine. The 9-item HPV Vaccine Attitudes scale assessed perceived safety, perceived harm, and perceived effectiveness of the HPV vaccine. Items were rated on a 5-point Likert scale ranging from Strongly disagree (1) to Strongly agree (5). A composite score was calculated by averaging responses across all assessed items, ranging from 1 to 5, with higher scores indicating more positive attitudes toward HPV vaccination.

Healthcare provider (HCP) knowledge about HPV and the HPV vaccine was assessed using post-intervention scores from the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Knowledge Scale included in the healthcare personnel survey. The 14-item HPV Knowledge scale consisted of True/False items scored as True (1) or False (0). A composite score was calculated by averaging responses across all assessed items and multiplying the result by 100 to obtain a percentage score, ranging from 0 to 100, with higher scores indicating greater HPV-related knowledge.
